Thanks, Dan, for taking the time to look into the 10-minute marketing strategy of these two celebs. I can easily imagine a similar marketing strategy for regular folks like me. Enlist the help of a friend who adores our work and has an impromptu interview using a smartphone video. I think it's better not to edit the video and post it on social media and YouTube.

Furthermore, I love organization too. It clearly helps the efficiency of the plumber!

Well damn! Just as I was losing hope at my marketing capabilities (bust into song on national television? I think not!) you came through with the takeaways. Thank you for this deep dive and the gentle reminder that repetition is helpful and necessary for connecting our work to people.

Thanks for sharing this. Such a good reminder that it does take consistent work. Sometimes I feel like I talk about my book all the time on IG but in reality very few people know I write a book. I have not embraced TikTok - and I think there is an audience there if I can just get beyond the overwhelm

I'd already seen that performance being shared on social media - another chunk of hard work to keep that flying too no doubt - and thought how clever it was to take the book's words and do a song. Showbiz is called a business after all.... but I still enjoyed myself in the moments listening to them joke and sing (and I liked the ghost hand appearing and puncturing the 'perfection'). Applause for your second by second analysis of it which definitely does work to make me think about the complexity and effort behind these 'neat' 'spontaneous' tricks. :)

Thanks for another heart-warming post Dan. At first when I was starting with my book, it was a little bit of fun but as I am nearly to the ending, my head is starting to be filled with doubts. I know that going into writing, is something else, its not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. I hope that my soul grow from my writings, and that one day my writing can reach a broader network.

All great points! As a marketing professional, I tend to analyze situations much in the same way you describe. One point that you touched on, but didn’t go into detail was all the brand reputation building McConaughey did leading up to Green Lights. He’s someone who has always been in the spotlight every now and then, but I remember seeing his name more frequently in the months leading up to the book being released. Some of the speaking engagements seemed a little outside of his usual circuit, more scholarly or distinguished than the average celebrity interview. There was no mention of his book until months later, after his audience might have started to realize he has skills beyond acting.

In the age of social media where advertising is constant, having a reputable brand is vital. Green Lights was a much easier sell for me, because of all the media exposure I’d seen leading up to the release that established him as someone who’s thoughts I’d want to read. As a bonus, it was marketed in a stealthy way that didn’t make me feel like I was being sold something. He created a connection, made me want to know more, then offered the solution in the form of his new book. It makes these 10 minutes to market Just Because even more effective when I’ve all been thinking of him as a captivating writer for the last 3 years on top of it.
