Today I want to talk about the pressure people feel when they consider how to share their writing and promote their books. We are all inundanted with information online, compelling stories, and "real talk" from authors who have done this work for themselves. We may commonly hear:
"You have to do this..."
Or the opposite, "Everyone is saying you have to do this, but really you have to do THAT instead."
And while I love that people are sharing their experiences with such honesty, today I want to talk about my advice: you don't have to. You don't have to do anything specific when sharing your work. There are no rules. You — and you alone — get to determine what you will and won't do.
This advice, which is meant to be freeing and give you agency, is paired with a question I will ask: "But what will you do instead?"
As always, thank you for being here with me.
