Listen to the voice of your ideal reader

Your readers are real people. If you want to reach them, listen to what they say.

This month we have been talking about identifying your ideal readers. Sometimes it can feel off-putting to consider learning about “an audience” or “the marketplace.” But what we are really talking about here is understanding real people: the readers who will deeply resonate with your writing.

Last week we discussed comparable work, which I called landmarks and guideposts. Today we will extend this to research the voice of readers who may appreciate your writing too. I will show you what I look for in this process, and how to walk away with insights that are useful to hone your messaging, understand how your writing fits into the marketplace, and more.
